The very first use of a .com domain name was on March 15, 1985, which marks today as a historical reminder.
Although the current site Symbolics.com is not as it first appeared 25 years ago, it still contains the important history and symbolism of what the internet now consists of. The ever changing Internet and the Websites that make it complete, was not created in March 25, 1985, but it was a breaking point and the start to a more simplistic way to use the Internet.
127.0.0.1 is just a series of numbers and periods to the common Internet user. That number however, is what the internet consists of. That specific number will loop back to your very own computer as to run it like a local server, which basically means you can host Websites on your computer to only you. Every site is associated with an IP (Internet Protocol) address that relays it to the proper server and delivers the user information. Domain names on the other hand are just words associated with the IP address. It’s very similar to how language relates to the items that it defines, in that words have no real connection to these items.
To break it down in the most simple terms, the .com domain name is similar to a picture of a McChicken (domain name) on the Mc. Nasty’s menu. You order that McChicken from a cashier/slave (the server) and shortly after your wait, the McChicken (the domain Website) is delivered to you.
The use of domain names rather than IP addresses clearly simplifies the ability to remember Website names.
