Apptastic Friday: Zombies, airports, controlling your blu-ray and more

Apptastic Friday!

This week we have some rather helpful apps for the lazy and those on the go. Not to mention a bit of zombie killing fun!

Oh look, we are reviewing apps that aren’t just crappy games about flying monkeys…

Gate Guru

Gate Guru

Gate Guru is the airport version of FourSquare, except it seems to have some actual point to it. Now don’t get me wrong, FourSquare is sort of fun, but it’s just generally boring. With Gate Guru, you review various things withing the airport, label exactly where they are and others join in. This would be extremely helpful for people like myself, which obvious is the only reason why this is even being reviewed. Ok so this is the first time in three years I’ll be in an airport, but I do have to visit six in a three day period (thank you grad school). Oh wait, we are reviewing this still.. Gate Guru also allows the person with the most points at the end of the month to score two free tickets from Jet Blue and 100 other people will win some sort of gift cards, which is probably just slightly better than the FourSquare discounts at Starbucks if you are a mayor. It also has maps of the largest airports, which is pretty useful on its own.

Defend Your Castle

Defend Your Castle

Defend Your Castle: Meh.

Pocket Blu

Pocket Blu

Pocket Blu is a sweet little remote that automatically detects when your PS3 or Internet connected Blu-Ray player is connected on the same WIFI network as your iPhone or iPad. Rather than using the obnoxious PS3 controller, this makes a suitable replacement and allows you to have a keyboard, rather than select letter-by-letter. If you already have a Blu-Ray remote, there is generally no reason to have this app. It was nice to be able to steal the remote power with it though.

Square

Square

Square is a mobile payment service for the iPhone, created by the big heads at Twitter. Currently the free add-on known as the Square is on backorder, but when the device is finally shipped, crack dealers and prostitutes can rejoice! You will be able to take credit card payments any time, anywhere, if you have a date connection (AT&T) may lead to its predemise. Honestly though, this is a very neat tool and they are going to start charging at relatively low rates in comparison to other credit card readers. Not to mention it’s mobile, creates a receipt that sends to both parties e-mails and takes a photo snap shot for security. They will allow first time users to start taking payments at a maximum of $100, but will increase it as the product is used more.

Bio Defense

Bio Defense

Bio Defense is a 360 degree tower defense game, with zombies! Rather than the boring line of incoming enemies, the zombies come in from all directions. Although there is a limited amount of weapons to be used, it’s a nice take on an overplayed concept. Not to mention there are zombies. The game mixes your basic strategy game as you must gather minerals, balance power and clear out the fog of war. It’s a very fun game and well worth the money for its polished style.
