One of the most epic PC games to be released in over a decade shows declining social media interest.
Starcraft was originally released in March of 1998 with two expansions shortly after. Fast forward 12 years and Blizzard has finally released a modern update.
At midnight tonight, millions of gamers will wait in lines at their local retail stores to get their hands on StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. If sales can be compared to the amount of chatter on social media sites however, it may be an early warning that earlier anticipations of record breaking numbers may not occur.
Commonly trends on Twitter represent higher interest in products, movies and other news events. Although there are still four hours until the American midnight release of the game, live feeds on Twitter show around 188 tweets per minute. In comparison to the movie Inception that released two weeks ago, over 500 tweets per minute are still about the film. Tweets by volume show an excess of over 9,000 mentions of the film Inception.
Blizzard’s wildly successful World of Warcraft is the third most sold PC game with 11.5 million units sold and the original StarCraft has sold 11 million.
