Chief US District Judge Vaughn Walker overturned proposition 8, and now social media sites are in a frenzy.
Judge Vaughn Walker overturned the controversial prop. 8 that prevented gay and lesbians to get married. It will now move on to the supreme court for final decision on the matter. This is noted to be a historic event for equality, as openly gay and lesbian people have been ridiculed for decades.
According to a poll of 500 random Twitter users [Continued Polling], the vast majority of them were pleased with the overturned proposition. On the other hand there is still a large number of supporters for Prop. 8, who will clearly appeal the ruling and push it to the supreme court.
Judge says the voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage was rooted in ‘moral disapproval’ and violates constitutional rights to equal protection and due process. Opponents vow to appeal all the way to the Supreme Court. Proposition 8: Ruling against Prop. 8 could lead to federal precedent on gay marriage – latimes.com
The seven million voters who were originally for Prop. have been defeated by a majority, which also marks another historic victory. Without trying to convey any political message here, it seems clear that America is beginning to change and become more tolerant of others. Whether or not people are against Prop. 8 doesn’t matter any longer, as there will always be opposing views.
