The rumor mill is complete and Microsoft has confirmed that they have purchased Skype for $8.5 billion. As the hours neared the final announcement, Facebook was one of the largest names attributed to possibly purchasing Skype, which begs the question of whether or not they didn’t make a suitable offer, or one at all.
Skype will become a new business unit for Microsoft, and retain their current CEO Tony Bates to continue running the show [Source - CNN].
