DLC Question, an indie developer creates a game solely to collecting money and purchasing DLC with it.

Now I won’t point any fingers at the big box game publishers, but now a days almost every major release has some sort of Downloadable Content (DLC) that is either completely worthless (different outfits or hats), or helps a gamer get ahead in the game without playing extensively (replacing cheat codes).

Going Loud Studios, the fine folks who brought us the Zombie Accountant, developed a new game that identifies how ridiculous DLC has become for games. While Battlefield 3 provides a packaged deal for those who purchased it new, and developer Valve is always providing great new content for free, some folks like to make as much money as possible. In games like World of Warcraft or almost every iPhone game created is the option to download visual upgrades. For example you can purchase armor for your horse or perhaps a top hat.

DLC Quest throws you into a Mario style world where you collect as much coin as possible, and of course purchase DLC content with your coins. Check out the official trailer, or even download the trial on Xbox 360. Honestly though the game is only 80 Microsoft Points, so you can expect a five minute review later on after this weekend.

Yesterday the popular news site, Ars Technica, published an article titled “Guns at home more likely to be used stupidly than in self-defense.” Unfortunately the purpose of the article was not so much to report on a recent study, but act as an experiment to see how much content their readers are truly taking in before moving to the comment section.

The author slipped in a sentence towards the end of the article that states, “If you have read this far, please mention Bananas in your comment below. We’re pretty sure 90% of the respondants to this story won’t even read it first.” As a redditor astutely points out it took three pages worth of comments for someone to finally mention the secret word, bananas.

As a community manager I would love to see this amount of engagement, but as a journalist it’s an unfortunate and common occurrence when it comes to our content. Prior to the internet when people relied on newspapers we still had the same issue. Most readers ignore articles below the fold, in this case below the scroll. This also reminds me of a teacher I had in high school who created elaborate comprehension exams that state we should read through until the very end before beginning. It was always nice to hear the wave of sighs once the students around you figured out what was going on. Trolls be trollin.

The Social Network is due out October 1, and already has peaked absolutely no ones attention. The Twitter edition may change that.

Author of TheOatmeal, Matthew Inman, jokingly terrorizes a fan after suggesting what comic he should create next.

This is another great example of things you generally don’t want to say on Facebook. Granted this is TheOatmeal and that is obviously his way of showing love for his beloved fans, this is quite acceptable and perhaps encouraged.

Ok, we really just thought the whole thing was funny because it started in a post from him winning a game of Scrabble. Play on playa…

When the Internet collides into a massive onslaught, it does it ever so well and unleashes pedobears.

So your birthday is coming up in a few weeks and you want all your friends to have a small shindig with booze and coleslaw; you build a Facebook event to let everyone know of said party.

What happens when a mischievous brother in turn posts a link to your small shindig on a site like Reddit? Mayhem, pedobears, strippers and cocaine spread all over the once humble Facebook event walls from more than 3,000 Reddit readers. In comparison to Paulcon 29, with only 16 confirmed guests, Paul will get quite the surprise when he checks the overnight boom on his guest list.

[Update: 3 pm] Paul canceled the event, ruining all the fun.

April Fools works best when working with those who know humor

Oh look, it’s April Fools. Why not mess with some friendly individuals while we’re at it.

While on lunch break I had noticed a few Twitter posts from an individual who often provides career advice via her feed. At this point I decided to give them a laugh for April Fools by doing everything you could possibly do according to her advice.

Chatroulette is a site that randomly connects two users to each other via Web cams or chatting, it often has creepers on it.

The slowly growing and infamous site Chatroulette has rolled out a new feature that snaps a photo of each and every user and pinpoints them on a Google map with their general location. Although the location pinpoint is not exact, for people using mobile devices like smartphones, it will get very close.

The site that has become known as the hangout for many a creepy man masturbating with anonymity will now be thwarted with the installment of chatroulettemap.

The site works by capturing the users IP address, which then plots them on a Google Map based on the ISP (Internet Serive Provider). Depending on the updated network, the ISP can place a user on the street or even the building they live in.

According to their site, “Chatroulette utilizes Adobe’s Stratus platform as a means of reducing their bandwidth costs while providing video services. Chatroulette mearly handles the behind the scenes handshakes involved in making two clients connect, the actual connection however is a peer-to-peer link between the two users.”

For the individuals who get caught with their pants down and would like to remove their image, they suggest to simply email them with proof of who they are. How they can differentiate between a persons privates and their face on the other hand is another story.

“Email us directly, chatroulettemap@gmail.com, we read every piece of mail which passes through and handle them accordingly. Please note that in most cases we do ask that you include some form of proof that matches you with the image you wish to have removed.”

The site also explains that there will soon be a way to report images in poor taste as well as rating them.

Twitter has set off the need to shorten URL’s and now you can do it with hacker style with ShadyURL.

Everyone from Google to Facebook now use shorter URLs, generally as a result of Twitter’s 140 character limit, but never has there been one with such pizazz.

To the common Internet viewer, a regular URL can easily be mistaken for a phishing site, but to the nerd, ShadyURL can only produce great humor. Although it’s probably only a matter of time until Google and Firefox accidentally lock out the shortened shady URLs, it currently turns any regular site into one that seems a bit “phishy.”

You can either choose from the full length shorten-er, which actually makes them longer, but funny.
